Rotor Design Optimization of Squirrel Cage Induction Motor - Part I: Problem Statement

Squirrel cage induction motor is the most widely adopted electrical machine in applications directly fed by main grid. The analysis, design, and optimization of this topology has been addressed a considerable amount literature over last century. Although its wide adoption, especially when carried out an automatic fashion, still presents significant challenges because accurate prediction performance requires time-consuming finite element analysis. This work proposes systematic approach to perform design squirrel focusing on rotor slot geometry, being major player defining torque-speed characteristic. Structured as two-parts companion papers, first part innovative evaluation methodology which allows very fast estimation torque, efficiency behaviour preserving results’ accuracy. proposed technique assessed against experimental tests off-the-shelf motor. selection indexes be optimized justified detail along with description generalized parametrization comprehensive exploration research space. presented procedure then applied case study, preliminary results are commented, highlighting benefits, drawbacks methodology.
